The Dead Don’t Shed a Tear

September 20, 2004

The dead don’t shed a tear,
or do they?
Do they mourn a lost love,
or a broken strangled dream?
Are they unaware of hemlines,
or do they bend to sew the seam?
Do they feel the pricks of conscience
over choices made in haste?
Do they choke with misplaced guilt,
or fear, or distaste?
Do they linger in the twilight,
suspended in space?
Do they wander in the shadows,
or vanish without a trace?
Do they ever stop a while,
to remember, with a wistful smile?
No! The dead don’t shed a tear
— or do they?
